#15 Alexander-Arnold’s ASSisting | PL Sheffield Utd (a)

I wasn’t expecting to see Alexander-Arnold’s arse crack while I was tucking into me tea, but there’s a first time for everything.

That was a pretty abject game, wasn’t it? It was a tough watch, and in truth, it was probably always going to be a tough watch. It was just about getting out of there with 3 points. It wasn’t a vintage Liverpool performance, but they did what they had to do. Sheffield United inviting Chris Wilder back for his 145th spell at the club was always going to add an extra 5-10% to their performance, but to be honest, I thought they were really poor. And Liverpool weren’t much better. The Reds had that extra bit of quality off the bench, and were able to find a couple of moments of quality when it really mattered, but it wasn’t pretty viewing. They battled through it, and that’s all that really matters.

Virgil van Dijk has proved time and time again this season that he means business. I think he’s desperate to prove he can lead this Liverpool to glory, and I’m desperate for him to prove it too. Colossus. Himself and Endo are the only two who I think shone on the night. Kelleher did the basics well, and MacAllister had his moments, but generally, I thought the rest of them were pretty average. The back four defended their Pulisball set-pieces well. Punting it long, long throw-ins, crunching tackles - I thought we’d moved past that as a league, but clearly not. Luton, for all they were branded “the worst team the league has ever seen” (they’re definitely not), had a bit of bite about them, and some threat going forward. Sheffield United, however, will do exceptionally well to get out of that relegation battle.

I do have minor concerns about the lack of goals from the front four players. Salah and Diaz seem so far away from the goal. Darwin can’t stay onside, and Gakpo is struggling to really impact the game. The last three league games have all been decided by midfielders or defenders chipping in with goals. I wouldn’t be as concerned if they were creating a lot of chances, but just missing that clinical edge to their game, but the wide players aren’t being as effective as they need to be if we have aspirations of winning this title. And I’ll tell you this for free, I want to win this league. Anyway, who cares. The goals will come.

I can’t really be bothered to write anything else about this one. Lovely 12.30 kick-off coming up. They better be up for it, I tell ya.
